‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to scoring with the Basque club
Whenhe first time the Athletic striker played in the UK, an teenage representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in the 2015 season, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in England, against the English side following that, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the attacker admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his top-level debut in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Strength training. With hip imbalance, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. He left in tears in 2020, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
