Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
