Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win not long after. However, that initial silverware remains his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said in response to a query about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the landmark with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal met immediately following his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

With chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured over 100 injuries from the beginning of last season.

Arteta currently has a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, stressing the ongoing need to validate his position. “I think a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the board and owners, while singling out the team's buy-in as most crucial. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad approaches the weekend fixture coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is expected to see him miss action for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
