Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
