The McCann family Parent Calls for Tougher Press Oversight Following Accounts of Media "Monstering".

Gerry McCann, father to Madeleine McCann has issued a call for increased scrutiny of the UK media, recounting how being "monstered" by the press made him feel as if he was being "drowning under the pressure".

The McCanns Tormented by Press "Abuses"

Gerry McCann stated that his family was tormented by press "intrusions" and that the media had "consistently hampered" the investigation into his daughter's 2007 disappearance.

He emphasized that the media attention exacted a "heavy burden" on his family. "We faced constant scrutiny and misleading headlines for many months that forced us to take legal action to stop it," he explained.

"We are lucky. We survived. We received tremendous support. Yet, I must tell you, there were times where I felt like I was being suffocated, and it was the media, mainly, not the situation we were in," he recounted.

An Appeal for Revive Press Regulation Review

McCann and his wife, Kate, are among more than 30 people who have put their names to a letter calling on ministers to reopen the second phase of the Leveson investigation, which was set up to look into the relationship between the media and the police.

He expressed that it was unacceptable that over a year later, press regulation was "no longer a priority". He said that his family had been subjected to "relentless targeting" by certain the media and that the press was "camped" outside his home for months after the disappearance.

Describing the Intrusion

Recalling the harassment, he said: "Reporters arriving at our home, cameras being shoved their cameras against our car window, when we had two-year-old twins in the back who were scared, and how upsetting that is for you as a parent."

"It's the inaccuracies. It's the fabrication of stories to fit the agenda, rather than the truth, which ruins lives," he emphasized.

The Need for Stronger Regulation and Accountability

He said the conduct showed why there needed to be stricter press regulation. "In the evenings, we'd put on the news, and there'd be splash stories about ourselves and alleged events," he told.

"That feeling is overwhelming, and you can see how people succumb to it and think they can't get out of it. The harm is profound, and we need that protection. There must be accountability. And at the minute, for most of these mainstream media, there is no redress," he asserted.

Official Response and Changing Media Landscape

A government minister commented that a second phase of the inquiry had been rejected and that the news environment was now profoundly changed.

"We share the view that the situation has changed profoundly from the time the Leveson's second phase was proposed: the public is now more likely to get their news from diverse digital platforms, which has created new and different challenges," they explained.

It was also noted that weighing the rights of victims with the need for a free press was a "complex balance to get right," but acknowledged that "steps must be taken in this area".

An Enduring Search for Answers

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a family vacation apartment in 2007 at the age of three. Her father expressed that it was "profoundly disappointing" how the press had frequently obstructed with the investigation.

"Confidential details which should have been confidential... So if you were the perpetrator, you knew a lot more than you should have done," he noted.

Speaking about hope, he said the hope he would find his daughter was "faint yet persistent". "Our wish is to find her alive, but we need to find out what happened and bring whoever's responsible, and other children are at risk while that person is free," he concluded.
