The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
