When Swimmers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed loud noises echoing through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching at her rear. The person was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for many victims.

Collective Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility beside the scene of the incident becoming a temporary medical station. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance going into the water to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, messages of support were shared. One post shared gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The group of lifeguards issued a communication, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are touched by the care directed at our team,” the group commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the shooting began right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” said a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for the public, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
